Nashville Companies Pioneer Internet of Things for Healthcare

One of the best things about our work at DevDigital is the people we get to work with.

Almost every day we talk to entrepreneurs who are doing amazing things and have incredible, innovative ideas that will change whole industries. And, because we’re in Nashville, these people are often working in healthcare.

One of the biggest trends across all industries is the Internet of Things (IoT). As Daniel Burrus says in Wired:

Of all the technology trends that are taking place right now, perhaps the biggest one is the Internet of Things; it’s the one that’s going to give us the most disruption as well as the most opportunity over the next five years.

By the way, that includes healthcare. There’s a lot going on in this space in Nashville, and we love the clients we work with who are innovating here.

EVVentus Change Home Healthcare

One of the biggest frustrations with home healthcare was the old school system for verifying a visit.

The healthcare provider would arrive at the home and call in to confirm their arrival. Besides being unreliable, it was expensive for companies to employ everyone needed to run the system. And, of course, that cost gets passed onto health insurance and consumers.

The EVVentus system uses bluetooth low-enegry (BLE) technology to “passively” confirm visits. A BLE beacon is plugged into the patient’s home, and every time a nurse visit, the beacon communicates with her phone to confirm she has arrived. It also clocks her out when she leaves.

With everything verified digitally, billing cycles are wrapped up faster, patients can confirm care more easily, and everyone is able to save on an already expensive process.

EVVentus has been a fun project to work on because it combines so many different technologies. Apps, BLE, and beacon technology all came together to solve a huge problem for both the industry and the patient.

InvisionHeart Speeds Up Cardiac Care

Time matters in few things as much as it does in cardiac care. Literally, seconds can make the difference in life and death.

The InvisionHeart team saw a problem in the way ECG’s were done, though. Current ECG machines are expensive, fairly immobile, and don’t transmit data real time. All of which hinder their ability to actually help a patient in an emergency.

The InvisionHeart solution is small, portable, and a fraction of the cost. It transmits data real time through its apps, meaning doctors can get information much faster.

We’ve been working with InvisionHeart to build out their iPhone app. They’re the definition of how the Internet of Things will change healthcare in the years to come.

Once only a unique feature of The Jetsons, the IoT is fast becoming reality. It’s an exciting time to be working in Nashville software and in healthcare!
